movies I want to watch before summer ends
Here are a few of the movies in my july-august watchlist list on Letterboxd 🎞️
Long time no see! Today I wanted to share some of the movies that are very high on my watchlist and I’m planning on watching during the rest of the summer. This list consists of movies either set in the summer months or just give off strong summer, beach, holiday vibes. I’ll be giving a small summary of the movie, reasons why I want to watch it, and in the end I’ll leave a link for my Letterboxd list where you can find all these movies and many more!
💌 Movie 1: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman.
I love movies that just rip off my soul and break my heart by the end of it; from what I’ve seen, this one is just like that! I also really want to expand my wlw movie knowledge and I’m pretty sure this is a staple.
💌 Movie 2: La Chimera
Just out of jail and still searching for his late beloved Beniamina, crumpled English archaeologist Arthur reconnects with his wayward crew of tombaroli accomplices – a happy-go-lucky collective of itinerant grave-robbers who survive by looting Etruscan tombs and fencing the ancient treasures they dig up. Arthur isn’t interested in the artefacts, though; he’s seeking a legendary door to the underworld, and to Beniamina.
If we are being honest, the poster of this movie is mostly why I want to watch it. However, I do also want to check out more of Josh O’Connor’s stuff since I loved him in Challengers - my favourite film of the year so far. Plus, many people have said that it reminds them of Call me by your name which is a strong reason why I’m so eager to watch this one.
💌 Movie 3: The Last Unicorn
From a riddle-speaking butterfly, a unicorn learns that she is supposedly the last of her kind, all the others having been herded away by the Red Bull. The unicorn sets out to discover the truth behind the butterfly’s words. She is eventually joined on her quest by Schmendrick, a second-rate magician, and Molly Grue, a now middle-aged woman who dreamed all her life of seeing a unicorn. Their journey leads them far from home, all the way to the castle of King Haggard.
I put this movie on yesterday and I fell asleep 3 minutes in. To be fair it was my fault for starting a movie at 2am in the morning so I’ll give it another chance. This movie seems so aesthetically pleasing, it’s definitely my cup of tea.
💌 Movie 4: Lars and the Real Girl
Extremely shy Lars finds it impossible to make friends or socialize. His brother and sister-in-law worry about him, so when he announces that he has a girlfriend he met on the Internet, they are overjoyed. But Lars’ new lady is a life-size plastic woman. On the advice of a doctor, his family and the rest of the community go along with his delusion.
Another movie where the main reason I want to watch it is the poster (it’s literally pink!). The plot sounds pretty interesting as well though! It reminds me a lot of the movie Her, which I love. From the summary alone, I know this movie will break me. Also, come on Ryan Gosling is in this! Is that not enough of a reason to want to watch it?
💌 Movie 5: The Cure
Erik, a loner, finds a friend in Dexter, an eleven-year-old boy with AIDS. They vow to find a cure for AIDS together and save Dexter’s life in an eventful summer.
This one has been sitting in my watchlist for such a long time, and I think it’s time I got around to watching it. The story seems promising, a sure tearjerker. I love movies where kids are just wandering around their small town’s streets; it’s my favourite genre!
💌 Movie 6: Billy Elliot
Set against the background of the 1984 Miners’ Strike, 11-year-old Billy Elliot stumbles out of the boxing ring and onto the ballet floor. He faces many trials and triumphs as he strives to conquer his family’s set ways, inner conflict, and standing on his toes.
Lastly, we have another movie centering a young kid. It’s probably clear by now how much I love them; and this one doesn’t seem like it’s going to disappoint me. The whole ‘rebelling against my parents and doing what i love’ trope is one of my favourites, and it gets me every time.
These were some of the movies currently on my watchlist. I really hope you found some new movie recommendations to watch for the rest of the summer. If you have any recommendations for me, go ahead and let me know! I’ll leave the link to the Letterboxd list down bellow. I’ll see you soon! :) july - august ‘24 watchlist ☀️👙🐚
