letter 1: introducing myself
get to know me, my favourites, and what to expect from this newsletter
Well hello there! I’m Mars a 15 year old girl from a little country in Europe and this is my newsletter! I first heard about this app on TikTok, as one does, and I was instantly interested. I’ve always wanted to share my thoughts and opinions with other people whether that would be through a YouTube channel, a TikTok account or a podcast. I then realised none of these were a great option since they involve a lot of speaking in front of an audience, something I’m not entirely confident yet since English is not my first language. So I decided to stick to what I do best; writing! Hence why I landed on this app.
A LIST OF MY FAVOURITE PIECES OF MEDIA SORTED IN CATEGORIES 🎀
I’ll be giving you my 3 favourites (not in order) from each category and a brief explanation on why I love it. The categories: films, tv shows, artists 🤍
💌 MOVIES:
1. Dead Poets Society (1989)
There are literally no words to describe this film other than perfect. Whenever someone asks me what the best film ever made is I always answer this one. I cannot describe the amount of love I have for this film. I’ve rewatched this countless of times and it will always be my favourite.
2. Call me by your name (2017)
Now before I start I have to admit that the age gap between the two main characters is gross and Armie Hammer is a piece of shit! Anyways this film has my favourite cinematography and aesthetic from any film ever. Every single shot of this film is a literal masterpiece and as a sucker of pretty landscapes, I couldn’t take my eyes away from the film on my first watch. My MUST rewatch every summer.
3. The perks of being a wallflower (2012)
As I stated earlier, I’m just a 15 year old teenage girl, who’s also introverted and lonely most of the time; so you can probably guess why I love this film a lot. I can surely say that Charlie is my favourite character in all of fiction and not because he’s cool or has superpowers but because he’s relatable and pure. I might be cheating a bit with this one cause most of my love for Charlie comes from the book (I think book Charlie is so much better) but I still love film-Charlie and the film in general, even though I think the book is far superior.
💌 TV SHOWS:
1. The Good Place (2016-2019)
To be honest this is probably the only sitcom I’ve seen since I’m not really a huge fan of the genre, so I can’t really compare it to anything similar, but I don’t care! This show is literally perfect. Occasionally, I think back to the day I first watched the season one finale/plot twist and reflect on how wonderful my life was at that time. Anyways this show is truly my number one comfort show, I rewatch it every time I’m in a bad mood. Also Eleanor and Chidi are such criminally underrated ship, helloo??
2. Hannibal (2013-2015)
Alright, I might never stop talking about this show once I get started, so I’ll try and keep this short and sweet (since I’ll likely dedicate a post on it soon). I actually haven’t stopped thinking about this show ever since I finished it this January. The characters and the dialogue are so well written and the cinematography is on another level. Tell me why they managed to make literal murders look so mesmerising?
3. Anne with an E (2017-2019)
In my opinion, every teenage girl should watch this show at least once; it’s life changing. It flawlessly captures what it feels to be a girl and all the stages of girlhood. In addition to its beautiful cinematography, aesthetic, and visuals the show also depicts different relationships perfectly. From Anne’s relationship with her adoptive parents or her best friend Diana to her emotional relationship with Gilbert. Furthermore, I can’t help but praise the way they tackle many serious issues from the time period the show is set in, such as racism and misogyny.
💌 ARTISTS:
1. Taylor Swift
I guess this is me coming out as a swiftie!? I mean, no joke everyone who knows me knows how much I love this woman. To be honest I don’t know what to say about her that hasn’t been said before so I’ll just let you know that my favourite album is Evermore and favourite song (or for the moment at least) is If this was a movie. Also as of the day I’m writing this TTPD is coming out in less than 24 hours and I’m SO excited!!!
2. Conan Gray
If I’m being truly honest, I listen to Taylor for like 98% of the time so the other two artists mentioned are nowhere near her level for me but that doesn’t mean I don’t like them or don’t enjoy their music! I’ve been a fan of Conan since Superache came out and it’s been my favourite album of his ever since. My all time favourite song is People Watching (I’m so mentally attached to that song) but I also loved Bourgeoisieses, Lonely Dancers, and Boys & Girls from his new album Found Heaven.
3. Laufey
And if I said that she’s one of the best singers/songwriters of our generation then what?? I can’t say I’m a huge jazz fan but I’ve got to admit I’ve been pretty obsessed with her magical voice recently. My favourite ‘album’ of hers is the Typical of Me EP (I know it’s technically not an album but whatever) and some of my favourite songs of hers are: Magnolia, Like the Movies, While you were sleeping, and California and Me.
🎧 Some other albums (and artists) I love :
emails i cant send (fwd) - Sabrina Carpenter
Harry Styles - Harry Styles
GUTS (spilled) - Olivia Rodrigo
La La Land soundtrack
AM - Arctic Monkeys
And that was it! If you’ve made it so far, thanks for reading and I really hope you enjoyed it. In this blog/newsletter I’ll talk all things film/tv, music, books, and literally everything else going on inside my brain. Don’t forget to subscribe if you are interested in the things mentioned above :) I’ll see you soon.
